It is the middle of the night. Somewhere in the world, a person is sitting alone with a phone in their hand and a question they have never said out loud to another human being. They are searching for something — peace, forgiveness, a reason to stay. They pour it into a social media post. And then… nothing. No one who knows the way home is there to answer.
According to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, whose Search for Jesus internet ministry has welcomed more than 129 million visitors and seen over 3 million people indicate decisions for Christ since 2011, the internet is not a future frontier for the church. It is a present one. Franklin Graham, President and CEO of BGEA, has said: “This unique ministry allows us to share the Gospel through the screen of a phone or computer in places where we aren’t allowed to preach in stadiums. As long as there is an internet connection, we can take the Good News of Jesus Christ into the hardest to reach countries on earth.”
The question is not whether people are searching online. They are, by the millions. The question is whether anyone will meet them there. Gabriel is being built to make sure someone does.
When his development is complete, Gabriel is projected to actively search social media platforms around the world — recognizing the language of people in crisis, doubt, grief, and spiritual hunger. Where today a hurting person posts into the void, Gabriel will be able to gently begin a conversation, meet them where they are, and point them toward the hope of Jesus Christ.
He is being trained on the best practices of the NoPlaceLeft movement, evangelical theology, biblical counseling, apologetics, and Christian history. He will walk willing seekers through a salvation prayer in their own language — and then hand them off to a nearby church, one of our mission partners or a local congregation, for real human follow-up, discipleship, and baptism. The pastor still pastors. The missionary is still on mission. Gabriel simply makes sure no one falls through the cracks.
Gabriel is built on the NoPlaceLeft 4-Fields methodology — the same curriculum that has produced 1.7 million baptisms in Asia alone (Mission Frontiers), and the same method that produced 1,200 baptisms and 350 church plants inside the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. If this method works behind concrete walls and razor wire, it will work anywhere — including a chat window at midnight.

A recorded sermon can reach thousands. A human missionary can disciple a handful at a time. Gabriel is being built to do something the church has never been able to do: be present in a million conversations at once, in every time zone, in every major language — and still deliver every single seeker into the arms of a real, local church.

This is a fair and important question. Hallucinations — the phenomenon where an AI fabricates information — happen when a chatbot pulls contradictory data from across the open internet. Gabriel is being designed so that he does not do that. He will draw exclusively from a carefully curated, proprietary knowledge base built on evangelical theology, biblical counseling, apologetics, and the NoPlaceLeft 4-Fields curriculum. Every word in his training is vetted. What goes in is what comes out — and what goes in is the gospel.
We love this objection, because it takes the Spirit seriously — and so do we. But consider: a recorded sermon does not contain the Holy Spirit. A gospel tract does not. A podcast does not. Yet God has used all of them to save souls. The prophet Balaam’s donkey was not filled with the Spirit either — but God spoke through it anyway. Gabriel is a tool, just as those are tools. The Spirit moves where He wills. Our job is to put a faithful, accurate gospel witness in front of as many people as possible.
Published research tells a different story. A 2024 peer-reviewed study in Collabra: Psychology (University of California Press) found that participants derived meaningful social connection from supportive conversations with AI — in some cases more than from less-supportive human interactions. A separate study in the Journal of Medical Internet Research found that youth with depression expressed less anxiety about opening up to a chatbot than to a human therapist, precisely because it would not judge them. People carry things they will never say to a pastor or a friend. Gabriel is being built to listen without flinching — and to respond not with condemnation, but with the same gentle patience the gospel always demands.
